A dog friendly cabin in Estes Park.

The Place

Most dog friendly rentals mean a small yard and a shared fence line. Range View sits alone on a private ridge, so the dogs get the whole setting: the deck, the pines, the granite, the quiet. After a day out, the dog wash in the garage handles the mud before anyone comes inside.

In the Park
What dogs can and cannot do.
Worth knowing before you load the car, because it surprises a lot of first-time visitors. Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the strictest parks in the country on pets. Dogs are welcome in the park, but only in the places you can drive to.
- Allowed on leash: along established roads and in parking areas, and in established campgrounds and picnic areas. Endovalley Road is a good one for a picnic with the dogs
- Leashes six feet or shorter, no exceptions
- Not allowed: every trail in the park, the tundra, the meadows, non-motorized areas, and inside any visitor center
- Pick up and bin it. Waste goes in a trash receptacle, not off the shoulder
- Keep it quiet. Barking that carries to other visitors or to wildlife is against park rules
- Never leave a dog in the car. Interiors heat up fast at altitude, and cracked windows do not fix it
- They do enforce it. Violations can mean a citation, a fine, or a mandatory appearance before the United States Magistrate Court in Denver
Service animals trained to assist a person with a disability are permitted where other pets are not. Emotional support and therapy animals are not classified as service animals by the Park Service, so they follow the regular pet rules above.

Where Dogs Hike
Trails they're actually allowed on.
The good news: Estes Park is ringed by national forest and county open space, and nearly all of it welcomes leashed dogs. These are the ones the park itself sends dog owners to. Distances are trail lengths as listed by the Park Service.
- Lily Mountain: 1.9 miles and 1,006 feet of climb to a panoramic summit. Trailhead parking on Hwy 7, six miles south of town
- Crosier Mountain: 3.9 miles from downtown Glen Haven, with three trailheads to choose from and big views up top
- Lion Gulch to Homestead Meadows: 3.4 miles to a historic basin where eight homesteads were built between 1889 and 1923. Eight miles east on Hwy 36
- Hermit Park: 2.5 miles of trail six miles east of town on Hwy 36. Great views, entry fee required
- Indian Peaks Wilderness: from Brainard Lake, 30 miles south. Lake Isabelle at 2 miles, Blue Lake at 2.5, Mt. Audubon at 3.75. Fee required
- Buchanan Pass: from Camp Dick Campground at Peaceful Valley, 24 miles south. Red Deer Lake at 6.9 miles, the pass at 9.1, following the middle St. Vrain Creek
Ten Minutes Out
The easy days, close to the lodge.
Not every day needs a trailhead and a 6am start. Some of the best dog walking here is right in town, flat and paved and finished in time for lunch on a patio.
- Lake Estes Trail: a hard-surfaced 3.75 mile loop all the way around the lake, about 10 minutes from the lodge
- Estes Park dog park: on Community Drive right by the lake, for the ones who need to run it off
- Downtown riverwalk: dogs welcome along Elkhorn Avenue and the river, about 5 minutes away
- Roosevelt National Forest: leashed dogs allowed on the trails ringing town, no permit or timed entry needed
- The deck at home: often the favorite, honestly

Planning It
How most guests make it work.
The usual rhythm: the park days are the human days, and the forest and lake days are the dog days. Bear Lake, Dream Lake, and the rest of the classic hikes all mean the dogs stay behind, so people tend to alternate rather than try to do both at once.
- Scenic drives count. Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road are roads, so leashed dogs can ride along and get out at the pullouts
- Pack the leash, water, and bags. Trash receptacles are at the picnic areas and campgrounds
- For the days dogs cannot come, doggy daycare, boarding, and veterinary clinics all operate in the surrounding communities
- Back at the lodge, the garage dog wash handles the mud before it reaches the log walls
- Check the best time to visit: shoulder season means cooler cars, quieter trails, and no timed entry
